I don't really care too much about the variety of technological attributes that salespeople quote to me. I'm only interested in something that is as thin as possible and I can slip in my pocket when I go out, and I've got approx. �150 to spend. Anyone in the know got any suggestions?

Have a look at the Sony p100.

I've got the p150 but basically they're the same except for the difference in the highest megapixel image.

Slightly more than �150, but you might get some sites offering them cheaper. (Dixons is �179)

to slightly stretch your budget (but its worth it):

BenQ DC E53 - �170

casio ex-z50 - �180

Casio Exilim EX-S100 -�160

others are good too, but those 3 are especially good for slipping into your pocket. imo the BenQ model is the most ideal.
