This morning I received an email telling me that Windows Messenger was amalgamating with Skype and I should download Skype. When I tried to do this I couldn't remember my password so I asked for a reminder. Suddenly I am being spoken to by someone from McHelper, telling me that someone was attempting to hack into my computer and would be able to access my bank and credit card details and I should let them help me by a one-off payment. The person I was speaking to was hard to understand and sounded Asian. I told him I would make further enquiries before I would take it any further. Is this genuine and does anyone have any information on it please?
No, its a scam. Did you click on a link in the email? Where did the email come from. Download Malwarebytes free from here http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html Make sure you opt for the free version and not the free trial. Install it, let it update itself and run a scan and delete any nasties.
The McHelper call has nothing to do with your Messenger and Skype issues. Its true that MS are discontinuing Messenger and encouraging users to migrate to Skype.
However the call you received is a well known scam. Ignore any such calls.
Thank you SA, It purported to come from the Messenger Team via my Live.co.uk email account. before hearing from 'McHelper@ I had clicked on 'Download Skype' and that's when I didn't know the password as I previously said and that's when I heard from McHelper. A shortcut saying Skype has since landed on my desktop and I have deleted it through the Control Panel. Should I do anything else? I am running a security through MSE right now.
