False GBytes

I have just bought and installed a Western Digital 120 GB External Hard Drive. Why does it show as having only 111GB? Where is the other 9GB?

Same problem happend to me the other is used for backup even though you dont want it you have no choice, i put in a 250gig HD in a PC once and lost over 15 gig.
Its something to do with file recovery after you delete it.

It's to do with how a GB is measured.

1GB is technically 2 * 30 = 1,073,741,824 bytes

Most hard drive manufacturers will class a GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes, but Windows classes a GB as 2^30

So when you install a hard drive a 120GB one will show in Windows as 120 / 1.073 = 111GB.
