Watching Films From My Laptop On My Tv Using Vlc Media Player

I'm trying to watch films from my laptop to my TV using VLC media player but am only getting audio from my tv and the video playing on my laptop! I'm using a HDMI cable and have windows 8. I'm a bit of a techno amateur so no long words please!!

On the laptop there should be a Function key that 'switches' on external video screen, something like F7 or F8 , but maybe different on your laptop. They usually work in conjunction with pressing an 'Fn' key on the keyboard at the same time.
Presumably you have also selected on the TV menu or console buttons to use the HDMI input port?

If not already, suggest you check on your Laptop manufacturers support website for any latest Graphics drivers and update to to those, if available.
There are also some VLC preferences settings that you could try 'playing around with' such as 'Deactivate Overlays' and 'output model set to GL' amongst others.
