Iphone Down Loo

I have just been at the hospice visiting and accidentally dropped my iphone down the loo. I need to inform people how my partner is as he is critically ill and not likely to last the next few days. Please can anyone offer any help as my phone is not doing anything - can't turn it on....

Can you get hold of another phone and put the SIM card into that? If your contacts weren't save to the SIM you could be in trouble though.

I heard putting it in something which will soak up (and out) any water may help, think it was rice but not sure.
