Then there are people (you know who I'm talking about Queenie!!) who disparage kindles etc on AB and then ask if they can have one for their birthday!!!) ;-)
On a practical level, I have been known to take about half a dozen books on holiday with me, which not only takes up space in the suitcase but adds to the weight og the baggage, you can have an entire library on a kindle and no extra weight in your suitcase....

There are a lot of free books available for a kindle, and some of the ones to buy are reasonably inexpensive. I did buy best beloved one of those mini Kobo things last Christmas, but I can download the a book from Amazon for a whole lot less than the same book from Kobo. For instance, I bought a "book" from Amazon which were three novels in the one volume that cost me £1.99 the same thing from kobo cost me over £6.00! (if you're interested it was the first three Inspector Montalbano novels by Andrea Camillieri - we liked the tv series so thought we'd try the books) It pays to shop around, I should have got him a kindle then he could "borrow" books from my kindle (we often like the same books)
Yes, I do. But I can see what a good idea a kindle is and I do like the idea of them for holidays, and even commuting when I finish a book and then don't have anything else to read for the rest of the journey. I'm still pondering on whether to get one or not... I don't think they'll replace books for me but kindles do seem more practical. I think books are one of the few things I get sentimental over, generally I'm always up for the more practical solution.
I have so many books we're rapidly running out of room to store them! I have bookcases everywhere, even on the stair landings! The beauty of the kindle is I can buy books and storage isn't a problem as they take up no space in the house and even better, best beloved doesn't know I've bought more books!
Mr BD bought me a Kindle two years ago at Christmas. It is still in the box. Not the slightest interest in it, Only this week I suggested to him that he used it when he goes fishing or for holidays. His answer was "No I bought it for you". He forgets that he bought it two weeks after I had bought 135 novels on Ebay for £13.00. You cannot beat holding a book. Good ones I keep and the rest go to the charity shop.
I too have a bookcase on the landing as you go upstairs, and one at the top of the stairs too - I can buy virtually all my new books at the church hall - what I like I go buy myself a copy and take back the originals for other to enjoy cheaply. I can definitely see the practical side especially the weight side on holiday - but I just like holding a book!
