Could your battery be getting old? Try taking the battery out and plugging in the laptop. If it works OK plugged in, its the battery. My laptop kept going black and switching off, I had to have a new hard drive. How old is the laptop?
What OS do you have ? If you have Windows 7 and receive automatic updates one of the recent updates is faulty and can cause your issue . You must uninstall it to fix the issue the update in question is KB 2823324 .Go to your installed updates and uninstall it from there.
Thanks for the advice,
I removed the battery, then removed the small silver clock battery, then put it all back together, and it started. it wanted to do updates because the time clock had gone back to 2006, but i have left it and it works, sort of.
If your laptop keeps reverting to an earlier time then fair chance is that the cmos battery needs changing (the silver circular watch battery type shape).
