Dvd Recorder

Can someone recommend an idiot proof DVD player/recorder. Mine is driving me mad, half the time it does'nt work as it is supposed to and does'nt record although I follow the instructions and then nothing happens. I tried the book, but it might as well be written in double dutch. I need one that is easy to understand and work. I'm on the point of throwing this one out of the window. Thanks for any advice.

I would respectfully suggest that it is a programming error that causes the required recording to fail – rather than a fault in the equipment.
When I last wanted to get to grips with the programming of such equipment – rather than leave it to chance, I would test my ability (to program the machine) by setting it to record in 2 minutes time, for a period of 1 minute. Then within a very short time period, I would know whether I had successfully programmed the machine as required.
I might do this a number of times to check that it was not a fluke.
On one of the VHS recorders I owned, the programming had a ‘T’ or ‘P’ option. When one of these options was selected (I could never remember which), the recorder would use broadcast program time signals to record only the program. However for it to work, the entered timings had to match the published program timings precisely – otherwise no recording would occur.
