so, my laptop (all of 6 weeks old) has gone in for repair and I have a loan laptop. it's a Compaq CQ57, which was at factory settings. I've set it up, linked it to my wifi, found 75 "important updates", updated Adobe, etc... when it asked me to reboot to instal the updates I found that... it reverts to factory settings at EVERY START-UP! arghhhhh!

I'm thinking of just shutting the lid rather than shutting down at night. will the laptop go into sleep mode? if so, how do I wake the beast?

check the cmos battery!
Question Author
cmos battery? what the hell is that?!!
the touchpad problem will be affected by your settings problem
I often just shut the lid :-/
Question Author
thanks Cazzz.. I'm much confused!

is there a solution?
Take it back and tell them its not holding your settings
Question Author
does it wake up okay, ummmm? my brother said it might go into sleep mode, and be as good as dead, lol
they should change the cmos, its their responsibility.
Question Author
cazzz, there's a doc on the desktop that warns you that it restarts afresh after every shut down, so it's supposed to do that.. you'd think they'd just do that when it came back from each loan period!
Yeah...wakes up fine. I just put the password in and 'ping' you're all here :-)
Question Author
okay.. well if I'm on the iPad tomorrow, there will be tears ;o)
oh I see, they have locked it out because its a loaner, that will be irritating wont it.. :/
Question Author
yes, there was much swearing going on.. especially after downloading 75 updates, lol.

so, *if* it goes into sleep mode.. is there wakey-wakey button?
I dont know what windows you are using but you can alter the shutdown/sleep settings by going into 'control panel' and then 'power options'
Question Author
it's Windows 7 (a breath of fresh air after Windows 8!).

thanks cazzz, I'll check that out :o)
Question Author
aha.. I've changed it from "sleep mode" to "do nothing".. but does that mean the screen will stay on?
technically yes, lets hope so eh! ;)
you would have to shut it down at night though
Question Author
oh! I thought the screen would cut out, and it would be fine when I opened it.. is that sleep mode? I've never had a problem with waking up any other laptop, that I recall.

will it overheat?
