Laptop Won't Detect Monitor

My brother broke his laptop screen a while back and ever since then he's been able to use it by connecting it to an external monitor. Recently we upgraded the monitor but the laptop wont pick it up, the monitor just says " monitor going to sleep", any ideas on how to fix this?
