Photoshop - save image without background

I've hit one of those remedial tasks which I can't get over!

I've got Illustrator and Photoshop and all I am trying to do is to save an image without the background from the original.

A quick dose of the magic wand and I've clear all I want to no problems. But when I save it for web, the image automatically takes on the background as a white. If you can't picture it, think about saving a circle and only the circle. Photoshop automatically makes it a square by including the white background in four corners.

Any ideas how I can get round this one?

Thanks.

you need to make sure you are saving it in .gif format rather than .jpg as .jpgs can't handle transparency.

Agreed, the 4 unwanted corners need to be set as transparent rather than white and then the file needs to be saved as a gif.
