Go into your profile, sloopy, and tick every box you can find to keep your access as limited as possible. Don't accept invitations to be friends from people you don't want to see your every posting.
You can't lock it down, anyone can see your basic profile, but you control (by making sure you check all the boxes you need to) who can correspond with you and see your postings.
Get it nice & tight and then get someone who isn't friends with you on FB to have a good nosy around and see what they can see of your profile.
Or you could even do what I've done and set up a second account (completely freestanding and unconnected) purely for the purpose of occasionally logging in and having a look to see what the world can see of your main account.
And don't assume that once it's all nice and tight that it will stay that way - FB are buggers for moving the goalposts and changing default permissions. Check it regularly.
You can set permissions so that your profile is harder to find by random people searching - some people on here have done that quite successfully recently.
Nope dotty, next to the white find friends, I have two navy people, a message icon, and a globe which lights up when I have a new alert, then a dropdown menu to log out.
