Am I correct in thinking a 17 year girl who is working would not be able to get a contract? If so could a parent act as a guarantee even though the monthly payments would be coming out of the girl's own bank account ? Or is there another way round it?

yes, Ive seen lots of mums in phone shops signing up for young & not so young schemers ;)
they don't care where the money comes from as long as the bill is paid but I think it will have to go in your name and not your daughters
Could she not just get a PAYG until she turns 18?
My 17 year old has a contract phone. I had to sign for the contract.

If i was to sign for the phone do I have to give my bank details as well as her giving them her bank details to pay the contract? If not what happens if she misses a payment?
you can give her bank details on the contract for payment but if she misses a payment you are liable
You will be responsible for the contract and if she misses a payment, but you should be able to set it up with her bank details if her account allows it.
