Just had an email from BT, thought it was a scam. Never had this before and didn't realise I had a limit. Could it be because I now have an ipad as well as my laptop? My laptop is always switched off when not in use but the ipad isn't, I just put the cover over and it switches off, or possibly is on standby. Should I switch off the ipad properly, would this make any difference ?

Are you sure it is from BT?
I had this 3 months running but was never addressed by name. Purported to come from BT, two or three days before the end of the month.
Ignored it, has now stopped. Usage not changed.

I'm always wary if I receive an email that doesn't address me by name. I treat them as scams and just delete them.

Recently, over a course of two or three months, I received unaddressed emails purporting to come from PayPal, stating they were taking money from my account for a Skype account, which I do not have.

I have had this constantly from Bt. It is genuine. I get it about 3 days before end of month to say I am approaching limit of inclusive broadband usage. They are trying to make us pay for infinity.
This month I complained since with 3 days to go they were saying I used 6gb of 10gb allowance. They responded I could not stop these emails as automatically generated when reaching 70% of limit. I asked since when is 6 out of 10 equal to 70% ?
they have not got back to me
You can also check your usage through the settings tab on your ipad. There are also free apps that you can download which just require you to input a little information each month.
We had this - we noticed our usage goes up with son of Mr BM is here. I upped our account to unlimited for about £2 extra per month.
I've never had this, but I've had the same PayPal/skype one. Just binned it.
I've had this email too. I'm on the basic BT broadband which means I get 10GB of usage per month. If you're concerned that the email is a scam you can go on BT.com direct and check you're usage.

I found I'd used 7GB of my allowance, with a week to go to the end of the month. I've only gone over my limit once and BT gave me a free pass, with a warning that they'd charge £5 if it happened again and if it continued they'd have to put me on a different deal.

At the time, I happened to be home more and had been using my computer during the day, as well as in the evenings.

So I think it's certainly worth double-checking on BT, it may be that since you've had an ipad which is more portable, that perhaps your usage may have increased from what it was previously??

I googled my title to this question and apparently BT does have this usage on its website. I will be ringing them tomorrow ...
We've just acquired BT Sport as part of our Infinity package - apparently if we use the On Demand service (which we probably won't) it comes off our downloading limit.
Oh look below, same question below from Frank97, two years ago!

I get this two or three times a month. It is genuine. BT want to sell you limitless broadband. If you do the maths , you'll probably find, as I do, that paying the surcharge is cheaper than taking the package.

I presume as it is August tomorrowI am back to the beginning of my usage ?

Can someone tell me if it makes a difference if I switch off the ipad properly ?
It seems to me to be trying to make people buy infinity even if nowhere near being near limit. In 2 hours from now you are into next months allowance.

Your iPad won't be using any of you allowance in 'sleep' mode, or very little.

Have you been using your iPad for things you don't use the laptop for? Streaming tv/video gobbles up data

I only use the Internet for emails, sebay, no videos, films etc.
