Close To My Broadband Usage Limit
27 Answers
Just had an email from BT, thought it was a scam. Never had this before and didn't realise I had a limit. Could it be because I now have an ipad as well as my laptop? My laptop is always switched off when not in use but the ipad isn't, I just put the cover over and it switches off, or possibly is on standby. Should I switch off the ipad properly, would this make any difference ?

I'm always wary if I receive an email that doesn't address me by name. I treat them as scams and just delete them.
Recently, over a course of two or three months, I received unaddressed emails purporting to come from PayPal, stating they were taking money from my account for a Skype account, which I do not have.

I have had this constantly from Bt. It is genuine. I get it about 3 days before end of month to say I am approaching limit of inclusive broadband usage. They are trying to make us pay for infinity.
This month I complained since with 3 days to go they were saying I used 6gb of 10gb allowance. They responded I could not stop these emails as automatically generated when reaching 70% of limit. I asked since when is 6 out of 10 equal to 70% ?
they have not got back to me

I've had this email too. I'm on the basic BT broadband which means I get 10GB of usage per month. If you're concerned that the email is a scam you can go on BT.com direct and check you're usage.
I found I'd used 7GB of my allowance, with a week to go to the end of the month. I've only gone over my limit once and BT gave me a free pass, with a warning that they'd charge £5 if it happened again and if it continued they'd have to put me on a different deal.
At the time, I happened to be home more and had been using my computer during the day, as well as in the evenings.
So I think it's certainly worth double-checking on BT, it may be that since you've had an ipad which is more portable, that perhaps your usage may have increased from what it was previously??
