Dvd/cd Drive Issue

Hey,

I am having a major problem with my DVD drive and the fact it isn't showing up in windows.

I've tried switching SATA cables and SATA ports. The drive shows up in BIOS but not in either Windows explorer or Device Manager. I'm getting frustrated because I'm not an idiot when it comes down to computers but this one really has stumped me.

Oh and the drive does work and I've also removed all non required HDD's and card readers.

Anyone got any ideas or could this simply be a brain fart on Window's part?

I'm probably way off target here as it puzzles me too. But would checking the Disk Management screen give any clues ?

You say the drive works - have you tried it on another system to make sure?

Maybe the device driver has become corrupted. You should be able to delete the drive in Device Manager and then rescan for hardware changes. That may reactivate it. If it doesn't show in Device Manager, as you say, then you should be able to select "show hidden devices". Then delete it and rescan for changes.

In the bios are the Sata connections configured to IDE or ACHI.

Thanks you two but I got to the bottom of it. Some bright spark had deactivated the ICH8 ports. I'm sure it was just a mental test lol. I know the drive was ok though as I've tried more than 2 in the same machine. I hate working on machines that run Vista, so damn slow. The pc needed a good hoovering out though so I didn't open up the case for nothing. Cheers :)

SlackAlice: Twas nothing to do with the bios setting. I'm sure someone was messing around with Device Settings but why.. I don't know...

There isn't really an explanation as to why anyone would want to deactivate the storage controllers but it wouldn't surprise me.

WyeDyed: It isn't my PC so I don't really have any desire to bother installing another OS. My beautiful beast runs XP and if for some reason in the future XP is unavailable I'm moving over to LINUX Redhat or Ubuntu. I so much prefer Linux but for some reason I just don't seem to turn to the darkside.

I only suggested that because I made a similar error myself. Just fitted a SSD to replace a HDD. Forgot to change the bios settings to use AHCI instead of IDE mode on the Sata connections. Wondered why although it was fast it wasn't impressive.

Now I have got it the right way round and W7 has installed fine, it is most definitely fast!
