after my laptop did last update. When I go into my documents they are changed to DOCX and I can't open them. It comes up with microsoft office is needed to open this file and is not installed on your computer. Anyone know why this could be? All opened fine before.Windows 7.

Do you get the option to open as something else- Word 97 etc?
Did you have Microsoft word installed previously?

I hope someone saying they were from Microsoft didn't ring you from India to give you this update
What were you opening them with before the update?
Are you able to copy and post here the full contents of the message which you are getting.

no phone call.Just normal updates. No option to open with anything else.Must have been opened with open office or word before.
I don't think OpenOffice can open .docx files although Libre Office can, and of course newer versions on M/S Office.

Look through your installed programs and let us know.

No open office will not open DOCX files but what has changed they all opened ok before.
Try altering the file extension from .docx to .doc with a copy of one the files and see if you can open the copy.

Just seen your latest post. You have OpenOffice installed?

Thanks all for help so far.

Giggsie......If possible I would 'hold fire' for a day or two because Microsoft appears to be hitting problems with updates. They know the position and are working on a fix; which hopefully they get right, without causing further problems.

Microsoft Office Starter is not a trial, just a cut down version of Office, more detail as per the link.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/starter/

I'd hang fire if the updates has gone wrong, hopefully they will correct this soon.
