I am not completely au fait with XP, however if this was happening on win2k I would say that it's time to defragment your drive. This is something that you should consider doing every month or so as a "good housekeeping" task.
Sounds like a key file might be corrupted - IE and explorer share a number of dlls and are closely integrated. Number of things to try: 1.use the system file checker to look for corrupted system files 2. click on add/delete programmes, select IE and then select repair. 3. Go to windows update and see if any part of IE needs updating. Above all run Scandisk (or whatever the XP version is called) and make sure nothing is out of sync/lost clusters etc.

Thanks guys but someone told me to look in the "objects" folder of IE6, I did, and I think that there was a "rogue" application there as well as the normal ones like msn chat, shockwave updater etc. classes. I deleted them all and now everything is fine!!! I also disabled all third party browser extensions, but i do think it was this script object class thingy in IE. Something had installed itself and had slowed everything doooooooown! Thanks and hope this helps anyone else in the future! Something new.net to do with domain names was also installed - I hadnt installed this program! must have all been to do with spyware I think! Cheers. Mark.
