Frozen Ish Iphone 4S

Having deleted lots of apps through the usage settings to download the latest update I found that pressing the circle button at the bottom had no effect. Tried switching off using top button but also nothing. My daughter tried to call and text and while new text showed at the top of the screen I wasn't able to access it and the call didn't show at all. Is there anything I can do except throw at the nearest wall? Never set up using a laptop so not sure about a reset or losing numbers. Currently on the settings screen where I can do anything within but can't get back to home screen. Please help!!!!!!!

Hold down the big circular button and press in the off button. When you get he apple logo let go of buttons. Phone should shut down then turn on again.
