I have a paypal balance but I want to buy something using one of the attached cards on my account. Is there anyway I can tell paypal not to use the balance but take it off the card? I have read the help etc but it seems determined that I must use my paypal balance. Any ideas? Google threw up nothing useful.

I once bought an item and I didn't have enough money in my paypal account, paypal took the balance left in my account to make part payment, and the rest came off my card. I just waited until the transaction was complete and then transferred some money back into my paypal account.

have either of you read what I wrote?
I want to preserve my paypal balance. So imagine I have £10 in paypa. Now I want to buy something for £30, Paypal wants to take the £10 from my balance and the other £20 from my credit cards. Rather than this, how do I inducePaypal to take the whole £30 from my credit card? That's what I'm asking, there appears to be no way on the face of it, I hoped that someone out there may have an idea.

Simple. If you have £10 in your paypal account and you wish that to remain after you spend £30, then pay £30 into your account from your card; before purchasing whatever you intend.
£10 plus £30 equals £40, minus £30 equals a balance remaining of £10.
Please correct me if my simple maths are incorrect.

When I say 'log out with paypal' I mean make sure you are not logged into paypal. I don't know how your paypal account is set up but mine requires a pin code sent to my phone everytime I log in. Once you have made the purchase (for example on ebay) you can then click to pay by paypal. This will direct you to the paypal login screen where you are asked to login. There will also be an option that allows you to pay without logging in. Something like "don't have an account, pay by card". I apologise for not knowing the exact message as I've not bought anything recently.
