Freezer Freezing Up Too Much

I have a fridge freezer, and the freezer section keeps freezing up too much. Everything becomes covered in powdery, snow like ice within a few weeks, and I dont know why.

Do you think I need a new freezer ? Do you think it could be dangerous ?

When I defrost it, it is OK for a week or two, and then it happens all over again.

Do you have any controls on it? What's the temperature at?

I don't believe it's freezing up too much, after all it's supposed to be at least minus 18C. Could be too much moisture in there...are you wrapping things really well?

Are the door seals closing properly?

Since the powdery stuff covering everything is just very fine ice crystals, then there is more moisture in there than there usually is. And, you've got three good reasons why this could be happening above...any of them seem to be right?

No freezer is full of food. Its just like it needs defrosting again, only after just two weeks. (Its not self-defrosting). Might be the seals - not sure how one would know ?

I used to get this frosting only when the door hasn't been closed properly. It has to be a bad seal round the door imo.

I agree about a poor seal. When you open it is there any pull on the seal at all or does it open without effort. Mine has a slight pull so I can tell the seal is working correctly.

To check the seal, wait until it is dark. Then put a powerful torch in the freezer and close the door. any small gaps will show up.

One way of checking the seal is to place a bank note against the seal on the freezer and then close the door. If you can remove the note with no resistance at all then you have a problem. You have to do this on different areas around the the door. It's not really that conclusive, but it is indicative of a problem.

Can I replace the seal ? Or do I replace the freezer ?

Probably would need to check the Net for spares, for your model, see if a seal is a replacement item.

Google "freezer seal replacement" in your area. IT is not very difficult to replace it yourself. If you don't feel confident then look in your phonebook for fridge/freezer seals. Some areas have a mobile workshop which will repair/replace the seal there and then.
