hi could one of you techis help
my husbands laptop is frozen ,it says on the screen updating 19 of 34 it has been like that all night
what do we do in plain language please he is 76

Just leave it to update.

Is there a hidden screen (underneath any windows on the screen) waiting for him to click ok?

Move around the windows on the screen and see if there is one underneath waiting for human input.

you cant switch it on or off and did leave all night to update nothing happened it has frozen

Hold the on/off button down. It should then go off.

thank you fender 62 couldn't get much plainer than that and it has worked , dont know why i didnt think of that perhaps looking for something more complicated.

I am at work and someone came to me in a panic. His laptop was completely frozen. He had reported problem (which involves a bit of a wait and his students were about to turn up). I said, hardly looking up from what I was doing, Take out the battery and you will be able to reboot and restart. Just popped into his classroom and he was delighted - It had worked!
