What Difference If Programme Moves From Bbc2 To Bbc1?
10 Answers
I see that the Great British Bake Off will move to BBC1 next year.... I remember after last years series there was talk of it, and Paul Hollywood commented that it would ruin the show if it moved to BBC1. What difference is there, people will still watch it?

But the downside is that to keep a place on BBC1 you have to attract a much bigger audience. Presumably they've calculated that it has wide enough appeal to shift from BBC2, but they may come under pressure to take it downmarket, eg cooking fish and chips and mushy peas.
Simply moving a programme shouldn't make any difference but changing its target audience might well do so. The move from BBC2 to BBC1 is often seen as 'dumbing down' a programme (or of putting a programme's popularity at risk if the programme isn't 'dumbed down' for a wider audience). Most programmes that make the jump from BBC2 to BBC1 (such as QI) soon go back again, as viewers often seem to feel that the programme is simply 'out of place'.
