When I tried to switch on my pc the tower unit wouldn't power up,I finally found that a connection had worked loose.But it made me realise that I could have been in a situation where I would have been unable to access important day to day info.If I had been unable to access data what could I or should I have done to over come this situation?? Thanks!

save your important stuff to an ehd and have a second computer?

Have a back up of important files.

Have a second device if you really need daily access to important stuff.

Yes, codswallop.

You could also used cloud base services such as gmail, google calendar, google docs so that you can access everything from any device connected to the internet.
