It completely bypassed me that this issue indicates having two anti-virus software on your system. As pointed out this is counterproductive. Are you speaking of the AVG toolbar? And you tried to remove it through your browser settings? Perhaps try to uninstall and reinstall your browser.
When you do get rid of it replace it with MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) it is completely free and just quietly does the job. Scan's once a week , you can set the time for the scan, mine does it at 2am on Sunday morning.

Yes I didn't see that you have 2 virus scan products, the 2 will 'fight' each other as each thinks the other is a virus, this is why AVG keeps scanning.
You need to get rid of both of them and install only 1, I recommend MSE as I said.

Perhaps you should have removed AVG first as having both running could be the problem, or contributing to it.

In addition I concur with Eddie's suggestion of MSE, this software was put onto my laptops by a professional in IT (who also happens to be my mother's boyfriend) who even told me that AVG was outdated.
MSE didn't work for me so I'm using Avast, which is fine and also free.
