Mains Ethernet Adaptors On Different Ring Main Circuit Can Anyone Help ?
5 Answers
I have a pair of Comtrend Mains Ethernet adaptors.
My Router is upstairs. My YouView Box is downstairs with the TV.
I have been through all the access point/end point set up which works as long as I pair them both up either upstairs or downstairs.
When I have the access point one upstairs on the router and the end point one on the YouView box they just wont connect.
They are not on extension leads but they are on separate fused ring mains circuits.
Nothing in the manual mentions this but could this the reason they will never work in this situation ?
Will I have to buy a wireless adaptor ?

It would appear that Ethernet over mains cabling does not work in your house because upstairs and downstairs have separate mains supplies. If you don't have two electricity meters, this is quite unusual wiring. If a suitable route for the cable is available, perhaps consider a new hard-wired 8-core armoured Ethernet extension cable connecting a new RJ45...

I have just found clip below this on Google my house is also Victorian so could be the same. The manufacturers bit at the end sounds to be valid in my case.

My problem is that my house is 150 yrs old and, although it was rewired recently by a previous owner, the normal power rings are not laid out like a new-build house. This is partly due to the fact that the previous owner was a skinflint and partly due to the layout of the house. This means that the router, Desktop and the collective AV Equipment, although all downstairs, are on three seperate power rings.
The guy in PC World told me that although manufacturers say that their powerline adapters won't work from ring to ring, across the RCDs, they actually will work.
