keep getting random pages opening up, cursor goes from where I am to the address bar . . . Grr? ideas please?

Download and install the free version of Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware: https://www.malwarebytes.org/free/ Open it and choose the 'quick scan' option. (NB: 'Quick', in this case, may well mean over half an hour!). When you get to the end, click on the option to see the results, check that all of the found items are ticked and use the option to remove them.
