Update Browser Boxes Appearing

I signed in to answer bank about 15-20 minutes ago and since then I keep getting half a dozen boxes come up asking me to update my browser with a ‘note’ at the bottom saying I need to use Java to do this. I don’t have Java on my computer as the only time I had it installed my computer was inundated with bugs and worms not long after putting it on. I close the boxes but after about 30 seconds half a dozen more appear. How do I stop these boxes from coming up? Am I doing something wrong? I am not very computer literate so any help or advice in simple English would be appreciated. I have windows XP and use Firefox.

That happened to me about an hour ago, lyall. I put a thread in 'computers' about it.

It sounds like a malware attack to me. Download and install the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:
https://www.malwarebytes.org/free/
(NB: When installing, take care to de-select the option to install a trial of the 'PRO' version).
Run a 'quick' scan with that program (which may well take over half an hour to complete), then click on the option to view the results and get rid of whatever has been detected.

Oh sorry Tilly2 didnt dawn on me to put it in computers, know idea why! Thanks Buenchico have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware already installed and have set it to do a full scan to be on the afe side. thanks for your help.
