I want to install a new cd writer, I have been quoted stupid money for it to be proffesionally installed, and wondered if there are any links for step by step instructions ?

its easy ! unplug & slide your old drive out and slide the new one in & plug in ! its that simple.make sure you mimic the master/slave switch setting on back of drive

I would be surprised if a new CD writer did not come with installation instructions in the box.

If your computer runs Windows XP, it really is that simple.  Some older operating systems required new software drivers.  If your new drive comes with mounting screws, use them!  SOmetimes the old screws are too long, and foul moving parts inside the drive.  Usually the instructions tell you the maximum screw length, or it may even by stamped on the side of the drive.

When you are pulling out the connectors from the old drive, pull them by the body - not the cable.  Gently wiggle them from side to side if they do not come out easily.

one point to note is to earth yourself as static may have built up in your body. just touch something  ie a kitchen tap or metal object. also unplug your tower from the mains.if you have a new drive the instructions are to hand. if all fails ask a friend . i would fit a dvd rewrite drive it does the lot.

waynepompey, if you go ahead and do this yourself, you'll be amazed at how easy it is.
If you're unsure, isn't there a friend who can help?

Either way, let us know if you're replacing an existing CD drive or adding a second one as this may make a difference. Also, it can make a difference if it's a CD writer or a DVD writer.

It's still incredibly simple but if it's step by step instructions you're after...
(do you already have the cd writer and does it come with a manual?)
