Minecraft Running On Windows 8

My son used his birthday and xmas money to buy a laptop with the intention of downloading Minecraft as his brother doesn't like him playing it on the xbox! He bought an Asus laptop which runs windows 8 and we have tried to download but just goes on a cycle of signing in and clicking on download with nothing happening. We have been told that windows 8 can't run it, does anyone know if this is accurate and how to get around it or how to fix the issue if we have been given wrong info. Thanks.
