I clicked on the link and found I'd downloaded 4 trojan viruses. It shows you need to be careful.

I wasn't thinking and didn't scan it. But malwarebytes has seen them off.

Apart from slowing down the computer what do they hope to achieve with viruses?

Can be criminal activity. Maybe grabbing your bank details & passwords, or taking over n the background to attack other sites or send spam. Or it may be just malicious "fun". Perhaps seen as a challenge. Loads of things really.
