when you download programmes from the net how do you know that you are not downloading crap or a virus?

bit torrent is usually reliable,stuff from the other p2p sites eg winmx,kazaa can easily be infected or false which is what put me off.

always run virus check on the dl'ed file before running just to be sure 

Download it from somewhere reliable (manufacturer's website?) and scan it with an up to date antivirus prog once it is downloaded.

you can never tell that what you are downloading is going to be reliable content - not even from safe sites. as far as the net is concerned, never take anything for granted. All sites usually have a disclaimer saying that if anything happens to your system, it's your fault and not theirs.

Best and simplest advice is to always run a scan of any file that you download, especially from p2p networks. I have caught and deleted many bugs etc. before the install even took place thanks to constant scanning.

get an ant-crap or anti-virus program
