Dvd Subtitles

Hi every one,
I have been trying to watch a dvd on my laptop but have been unable to activate the subtitles through the menu because there isn't option for subtitles, or sdh, however there is a symbol that looks like an envelope, ie a square with a cross inside, I do not know what this symbol means, does it have anything to do with the subtitles?. Thanks to any one who can help.

I recommend Daum PotPlayer...available here

Choose 64bit or 32bit to suit your operating system.
Once installed right click anywhere on the screen and choose 'Subtitles'.
There are many options.
