Tracking internet usage

After a rollocking at work today, I'm slightly concerned....

Can those up high at work actually track my internet usage, right down to what I'm posting on here?

Yes, if they have the right software. Something like ISA server can give statistics on internet usage by network account. So even if you use another computer, it will know who is doing what.

Personally, I feel this is an invasion of privacy and would be very annoyed if I was spyed on in such a way without my knowing. If I did know, I'd have found a way round it ;o)

Seriously though - if you are using a computer in work, your employer does have theright to monitor its usage.  Most have fairly sensible policies - our work allows personal use during breaks etc., but not to just any site - sites about hacking, illegal drug use, pornography etc. are banned at all times.  The employer does reserve the right to inspect the logs for individuals, and can take various actions depending on the seriousness of any misconduct detected.  They do not however, routinely monitor what people are doing.

You should have an internet usage policy at work, so read to see wot you can get away with.

This is really a very serious issue, and one that needs to be addressed. What it centres around is the fact that your employer has not done enough to make your work environment a welcoming and challenging place, and has forced you to look to Answerbank for the abundant stimulation it provides.

Also, I do remember Georgi that you asked some very work related questions. Hope it works out.

Instead of getting the boss into the sack, get him/her into answerbank and then he will understand your addiction and associated inability to complete work tasks!!

If you have to sign-out stationery like envelopes and sellotape, it's fair that the company keeps a note of who "signed-out" bandwidth. After all, the company's paying for both!

Most firms don't mind a few rolls of sellotape going home to wrap Christmas presents, and probably won't mind the occasional access for a valid personal use.

However, if you over use it, like taking home 1000 rolls of sellotape - quite simply it's theft.

Would logs/records of your internet usage hold up in court? I mean could you not say someone found your password (our IT guy has them all for obvious reasons anyway) and used the net in your name?

Surely unless you have CCTV footage of me on here who's to say "it wasn't me guv!"?

That's what I'm going to try when they find me out anyway :O)

that shouldn't happen, you should never give your password to anyone at all.  Most  i t administrators would have the ability to reset your password in the event you forgot it anyway
