We are thinking of having a burglar alarm installed following a couple of house break-ins in our road recently. Have no idea where to start so any advice is welcome regarding price range, effectiveness, etc. We live in west Kent in what is generally regarded as a fairly crime-free area, so the recent break-ins have got us a bit jittery.

Price could range from little (d-i-y kit from hardware shops) to a lot depends upon how sophisticated you want it and the work involved to install and maintain it. Other considerations are if you want it police monitored for response. You may be best talking to local security installation firms
Enter 'burglar alarms cost' in your search engine. I've just done that, and there are lots of websites that offer advice.
You could go for the much cheaper option of a "dummy" alarm box, similar to this one. After all, it's the deterrent effect you're paying for....even if you get a fully-functioning alarm.

Thanks folks. Yes, a dummy one is a possibility as it would be a deterrent. Will give it some thought.
A decent system could cost up to £400 - don't go for the DIY option - they really are awful.
Scantronic System fitted with Dual-Tec sensors will see you all right.
Dual-Tecs work with microwave and PIR so minimise the risk of false alarms.
