Hp Printer Install Failed

Hello all,

Ive been out and bought a brand new HP 2540 printer. Ive unboxed it and inserted the Installation CDROM. After loading I get the windows Install wizard message "Cannot install this hardware, Synapse PS/2 pointing device, there is no driver selected" I go through the HP fault finding proceedure and restart my PC, and download the latest HP2540 software in the hope that this would solve the problem but it makes no difference. I download the synapse pointing device driver and unzip it but again it makes no difference. Install fails

I ring the shop helpline and I am put through to the HP support engineer who says "It looks like an incompatibility problem with Windows XP as this is no longer supported we cannot help you" I am sure ive seen this model of printer on sale before XP was dumped by microsoft.

I dont particularly want to have to drag it back to the shop for a refund, I simply want to get the printer working with my Dell Inspirion 6400 Laptop.

Any ideas?

If you are running your Dell with XP, you are going to have problems - XP support is now withdrawn, which means any updates which would allow your printer software to interface will not be forthcoming.

I would bite the bullet and upgrade your Windows.

I had to be dragged kicxking and screaming into Windows 8, but like all systems, when you get used to it, it's OK.

Thanks Andy the Dell is fast running out of disc space I've only 5Gig left and the Dell is slowing up a lot despite cleaning the registry regularly. Do you know how much MS want for an upgrade?

vakayu - it seems to be more 'modern' if that doesn't make me sound like a Luddite!

I had to have some software put on to allow me to open and close it in a similar fashion to XP, bur i have got used to it now.

It's all whiz-bang for then pesky youngsters - I am now officially 'so last century!' as my eighteen-year-old grand-daughter put it so succinctly!

The HP website includes XP as a supported operating system for your printer:

However it's not clearly from your post exactly which program is incompatible with your operating system. You don't need much of the software that comes with printers these days. As long as the drivers work you can simply use alternative software. For example, if I want to scan something I simply open Photoshop and scan into that program. (Free software, such as GIMP would work just as well). I don't use the program that came with the printer.

Either try downloading and installing the basic driver (from my link) or use the CD-ROM but look for a 'custom install' option and then install just the driver(s). The printer should then work. If there's more stuff on the CD that you think you might actually need, use 'custom install' again and try to install just one item at a time. Repeat as necessary.

Try downloading and installing the printer drivers for XP from HPs support website and see what happens. You must follow the prompts to the letter or the installation may fail.

If your thinking of upgrading your O/S then make sure your laptop is suitable. It must be getting quite old if it started with Windows XP.

Ha if you are so last century I am even further back than that,at least you speak the "lingo" I am very guilty of finding something I know and like and more importantly can operate very basically,I stick with it and do not embrace new up to date things,thanks for reply.

Yes I can't understand why the touch pad driver is relevant to the printer. Pleased you picked on that up.

I may be talking through my backside about this but something strikes me as odd.
I believe you first install the printer Software and then plug in the Printer when told to, so that the computer can then couple up with the printer.
However, if the printer is wireless, how can the computer contact it as you will not have installed the wireless date yet. Wouldn't you first need to use a USB cable so that the computer can contact the unknown printer and then sort out the wireless business??
If I'm talking rubbish, please ignore me as I'm getting too old for this game.

It's nothing to do with XP being dumped by Microsoft, it's all down to HP. They, in their wisdom, decided that when they brought out this printer there would be too few people still running XP for it to be worth their trouble writing drivers for it. When I moved from XP to Vista I lost a perfectly good Epson laserjet because Epson didn't write Vista drivers for it assuming , because it was about 10 years old, that no-one was still using them. The problem was the reverse of yours but for the same reasons.
