I have desktop in one room which is wired to BT Hub 3.

I use my laptop in the next room and until very recently I could access the Internet via the desktop.

I am unable to get on internet from the laptop and have to use the WI-FI- Fon
connection which requires frequent log in & I'm worried from the security
aspect.

Can any of you techies please help me re-establish my connection with the router.

>>>I am unable to get on internet from the laptop

Does your laptop show that it's connected to the router but fail to allow you to access the internet, or can't you connect to the router at all?

If it's the former, resetting the laptop's TCP/IP stack usually fixes the problem:

If it's the latter, does a connection to your router actually appear in the list of available connections? If so, what actually happens if you try to connect to it? (And lastly, of course, are you really, really sure that you're entering the correct password for your BT Hub and not, for example, your one for Windows?)

Thank you for your prompt reply.
As you have probably realised I am not very adept with technology.

My laptop does not show it is connected to the router & I can't connect to the
router at all.
I tried using an ethernet cable from the laptop plugged into the hub but no joy.
I called BT for help but their answer was that I my laptop was faulty. I can't
understand how I can access the Internet via the WI-Fi -fon if my computer
is the problem.
Excuse my ignorance & the non use of the correct vocabulary.

I wish everyone who writes "I am not very adept with technology" would think of things like that! You've saved me (and anyone else posting here) a lot of time in posting answers that would be irrelevant anyway!

It sound like the network adapter in your laptop isn't working. If it's a hardware fault then it's definitely time for a trip to the repair shop but it might be worth trying to reinstall its driver first. What's the make and (exact) model of the laptop, please?

My apologies for not coming back to you Buenchico.

I was fed up with things and went to bed!

I have an Acer Aspire 7540.

Thanks for your help.
Sorry for the delay. Go here:
http://www.acer.co.uk/ac/en/GB/content/drivers

(Fairly obviously) select these settings:
Group = Notebook
Series = Aspire
Product = Aspire 7540.

Check that the correct operating system is shown.

Download both the LAN and Wireless LAN drivers and save them somewhere suitable on your laptop. They're both zip files, so you'll need to double-click on each of them to extract the driver installation files. Then double-click on each of those to reinstall the drivers. Restart your laptop and cross your fingers!

Thanks once again for all the trouble you are going to to
help me with my problem.
I went to the link you provided and entered the settings.

I'm stumped as to how to download the drivers as there was
nothing I could see on the 'Drivers & Manuals' page to do this.

I think I better take your other advice and take my laptop
to a repair shop this coming week.

Thanks once again. You are a very valued member of this site.
What Windows O/S are you running? Windows 7 32bit or 64bit?

If your not sure, go to Control Panel/System and Security/System
In that window it should give the version of Windows your running and a bit further down the page the system type (either 32 bit or 64bit)
Question Author
I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

Thanks

Here's what I see:

(You might have to press Ctrl and + together several times to make the image big enough to view easily. Press Ctrl and 0 together to revert to your normal display. I've marked the relevant download links in red).

Thank you again Buenchico for all your help.

I've been unsuccessful and am using my desktop to send
this message as I can't even access WI FI- Fon or get any
internet connection on the laptop.
I'll take it into to a repair shop later this week.

Many thanks.
