I switch my computer on 1st thing in the morning and leave it on all day until I go to bed, checking in to get e-mails and browse the web occasionally. Is it cheaper to switch it on and off during the day or leave it powered on ?

Just put it to sleep. That turns the monitor off which is by far the biggest energy consumer of your pc but quickly starts it again without using energy.

Definitely cheaper to switch it on and off a couple of times a day rather than leave it on and idle.

why not have a tablet or I pad for that stuff
Switching it off when not required is cheaper in energy, certainly, but the question mark is over whether the repeated thermal cycling will cause more rapid deterioration of its most sensitive components. If you have to replace the computer a year or two earlier, there's an environmental cost to that, as well as a financial one.
If I was you, I`d just leave it on `hibernate`
