Texting Abroad

Is there anything that needs doing differently if someone is texting italy from the uk and vice versa if both have uk phones

What would the cost be?

If you have smart phones then the cheapest way is something like Whatsapp.

I did think you had to have the +44 stored in the front of the number when texting back to the UK from abroad, I know I did while on holiday.
