When I delete a file and it shows as going in the recycle bin and is then deleted, although the file still exists does it show as taking up space on my hard drive?, I ask because I have only 30Gb of space left but cannot for the life of me understand what is taking up so much room

TIA

There are applications around that will scan and categorise your disk use.
Although, as you correctly say, 'deleted' files still exist on your hard drive, they shouldn't show up as occupying space because 'deleting' them actually marks the space they occupy as 'free'.

Thanks for both your answers, Chris I will try the link when I get home, thanks again
Do a Disk Clean up (part of Windows).

Maybe do a defragment of your hard disk.

Ensure your recycle bin is empty.

Clear out your browser temporary files.

Maybe install cCleaner (free) and run a disk clean up.

A free program called TreeSizeFree can tell you your largest folders.
