My question is prompted by the author John Grisham's remarks reported in this article.

you do not innocently stumble along child pornography at all, and I imagine it's virtually impossible to download any unless the intent was there.

I've been dossing on the internet since pretty much as long as it's been around, and in all that time i've not once "stumbled" across child pornography, and believe you me ive accidentally landed on some bizarre and surreal stuff.
I still maintain that it's impossible to do so unless a serious intent to find some was there.

I'm going to stick my neck out here and will probably get shot down in flames, but I think I agree with him. People will watch things just because they are there. They would not dream of doing a similar deed themselves but it's all out there, so it seems ok.
I was shocked when a relative of mine offered to email me footage of a beheading by ISIS. This is one of the loveliest men you could ever hope to meet, but he watched this, said it was horrific, and asked me if I wanted to see it!
I don't know how easy it is to "stumble" across child porn, but I have had other types of porn pop up unexpectedly.

BOO - " ... you do not innocently stumble along child pornography at all ..."
I have to disagree.
As you may have seen on other threads, some years ago, I was contracted by Microsoft to check out a list of websites for child pornography - a lot of sites are set up using Microsoft software, and they were undertaking a sweep in what was to become - although we didn't know at the time - Operation Ore.
I was given software that wouild allow me to visit and view a site's content without leaving any trace of my visit - this being because any sites of this type would be hper-sensitive to 'outsiders' and any detected traffic would mean the sit would be shut down and re-opened under another identity.
Abuse sites 'hide in plain sight' - they have innocent looking front pages, and the dogy stuff is behind, if you know it's there - but that does not preclude a perfectly innocent browser finding the site.
One of my sections was 'car enthusiasts', and one was 'food' - and under two completely innocent fron pages which any browser could find, I found Level 5 images on the inside pages.
So - yes it is possible to accidentally find a site like this - they are unlikely to be tagged with 'distressing images this way!' - but -
the actions from there are the browser's own.
Finding a site by accident means you click off it and report it to the police.
Exploring it further and downloading makes you a child abuser, and hopefully within the reach of legal process.
So yes - these sites can be accessed in all innocence - someone looking at Vauxhall Corsa engines or various kinds of nuts could have found two of the ones I discovered, but I clicked back and reported them, as I was required (and delighted!) to do - anything else is a different darker set-up entirely.

BOO - "But the wording of that article claims "watching child pornography" svejk. In order to watch it i'm assuming that you'd have to imput your credit card details then download it."
All the other posts came in while i was typing mine -
you are right, there are many sites out there that operate as businesses and have credit card payment systems linked up, but as i have explained, there are plenty of 'enthusiastic amateurs' who share images among themselves, and use the websites I described to notify like-minded people - usually an 'exhcange' is set up - God I feel ill just typing this!

BOO - "I'm still stuck on the wording of the article though andy...it stated "WATCHING child porn", im still doubtful you can innocently stumble across it (despite your post- sorry) but no one can possibly claim they accidentally watched it!"
I entirely agree BOO - I reiterate that it is possible to find a site that has a perfecly innocuous front page, with nine cirles of Hell behind it - but staying to explore, or to download, is an entirely different matter.
I stayed on each site for the 'less-than-a-second' of time it took me to click back to the front page, note the ID and fill in my log - that was still more time that I would have liked.

sandyRoe - "Didn't one of the members of the musical group, The Who, admit to looking at child porn motivated by nothing more than curiosity?
