On my partners Laptop running Windows 7 BBC News used to fill the screen. Now for some unknown reason it is a bit like viewing it in 4:3 rather than widescreen. She wonders if by chance she has pressed something on the keyboad. Closing down and restarting does not change anything. Other websites are ok. Any ideas welcomed. Thanks

Was the 'widescreen' version definitely the news page? There is a separate homepage:-

Yes, the page was BBC News. We both have a laptop and when viewing the same page on both, mine is fine but my partners shows a smaller version of that page. Same info but just smaller.
This is how the BBC News page appears in my browsers (PaleMoon, Opera, Maxthon):-

http://s1347.photobucket.com/user/bibblebub/media/Scr2014-10-2009h11m46s_zps233b0519.jpg.html

and, as you can see, there are broad, white borders on the left and right.

If yours is different from that then which browser are you using? And you are both using exactly the same URL?
Open Page > press Ctrl > then plus button (+)

Hans.
If a mouse is connected to the laptop.....Scroll the centre wheel forwards to increase and backwards to decrease, whilst holding down Ctrl.

This should explain all of what I am saying :-

Thanks Hans, holding down Control then + solved the problem. Thanks biblebub for the photo of how yours appears. It is exactly how my partners is (or was until trying Hans suggestion). The strange thing is that my partners has only just started to appear small, so no idea why. She used Chrome browser, I use Firefox.
It looks like she'll just need to go through the process each time she views BBC News as most others sites appear ok.
Thanks again to you both
Other sites are ok because they have Not been altered. However, if the BBC page is enlarged, it should remain that way; until further altered.

I altered my page for AB a few years ago and it still fills the screen.
