I am considering buying my mum a Kindle for Christmas. She is a dedicated book reader and personally would not buy herself a kindle as she suffers from eye strain when reading from a computer, smartphone or tablet etc.. I have decided to risk buying her a kindle as the screen looks like a book page and will not give her a headache. However I am torn between buying a kindle or a kindle paperweight. I see that the kindle paperweight comes with a built in light. Does this mean that it is more like a tablet screen and will cause eye strain? I have tried to find out on google and on reviews but had no luck. Please help!

there is no such thing as a kindle paperweight (unless of course you do use it to weigh paper down)
I don`t have the paperwhite but I have seen customers at work using them and the screen doesn`t appear bright like a smartphone. The light seems muted.

I should add that she doesn't have a smart phone as she is not very good with touch screens, so would she prefer the 'standard' kindle?
will she read it in the dark?
I have one - I like it. The brightness can be adjusted to suit.

No she probably won't read it in the dark. I'm just worried that because it has a light she will not like the display and will prefer the Kindle.
if she wont read in hte dark, id get an ordinary one
^Agreed. I do read mine in the dark.
The light is only there for when you want to read it in bad light. In daylight the light is not necessary. My wife has a Kobo, which is similar, but has the advantage that you can get ebooks from libraries (free) to read on it.
Play it safe and give her a book token.
As others have said...the light is muted(not bright white),and is adjustable in different light conditions. I got mine so I can read outdoors or in strong sunlight. You can't do that with a tablet.
Here are some images(I hope!).

what does paperwhite screen look like.

If no images...Google "what does..." Loads of pics.
