I have downloaded Spotify onto my computer, does one have to sign in to spotify before they can use it?

If so why is this, and is it safe?

Yep.........it is as safe as houses (whatever that means)

It's safe aog

I think the sign up is because users of the free product (apart from getting ads) have restrictions around how much music can be listened to - i think it's 10 hours per month

Hence the 'account'
Zeuhl: I think you have out-of -date information about Spotify. The free version DOES have ads but no longer has playing-time restrictions.
Thanks ginge

I think it was like that when i signed up and i've never 'hit the buffers' anyway

thanks for correction :-)
^ to answer aog's question then

I suppose they use 'account' system to keep track of rights payable to artists and to prevent unreasonable use or similar?
...and to "personalise" the service eg recommend tracks that you may like, based on your past music choice...
You will most certainly have to register with Spotify and will be subjected to regular charges which no doubt will be dependent on what you download as a member.

The site is Not my scene, so I am unable to recommend it; although it would appear to be a safe site.

>>>and will be subjected to regular charges

I have been using Spotify for years and never paid them a penny.

Don't you like music Hans?
There won't be any charges at all for the free version.
Yes, Hans...please tell us about the regular charges that the free version of Spotify incurs...we are all ears!
@gingejbee......Would have replied to you yesterday evening but my wife and I were entertaining friends.

My apologies for having Not realising that there is a Free edition of Spotify.

Thanks for all your answers, can one download the music onto disk or is it just for listening to?
In the link which I have given above ^^^ it does indicate that you would have to pay for the Premium edition to 'Download Music and Listen Off-line'.

Consequently, it is my view that unless you opt for 'Premium' and download to an audio file in your computer, you will Not be able to transfer music to disc.

It would be interesting to hear the views of others.

I use the free version of Spotify and for some strange reason I don't get adverts at all on it, I had them for the first few weeks and then they just stopped :)
You cannot make cd's with the free version AOG.

Thanks once again for all of your answers, seems to me to be a waste of time, unless one wants to listen to one's music via a computer.
Connect the comp to the stereo.
