Images Showing As Thumbnails But Not As Full Version

Hi folks, DD has eventually accepted that keeping a gaziullion photos and video clips on the phone is a bad idea. However, the data was only transferring slowly / not at all onto her Windows 8 laptop via a card reader. I've tried the same card reader in my Windows 7 machine and it wants to format it (no!)
I've retrieved the data using recovery software but there seems to be an issue with some of the photos, namely that they appear fine as thumbnails but only partly open as full versions - literally a strip of image across the top, for example.
Anyone know anything about this? I haven't tried it on DDs brand spanking new laptop yet, so only know this to be the case using Windows 7.

Try opening the photos in another programme and use that as default if successful?

So far I've tried photo viewer, picture manager, paint and fireworks.
