Android Powered Tablet

Just bought on impulse a cheap tablet computer for the wife for Christmas.
She only wants to surf the web, access e-mail and view pictures on it.
The one I bought comes with Android Kitkat installed on it.
I have an iPad and I needed an iTunes account.
Do I need to set up a Play (?) account ready for Christmas Day to get the thing up and running ?
Question to any Android users.

Purchased tablet here in CH ...was a bargain :-)

The tablet should come with a 'Play store' app already installed but you would need a Google account to purchase other apps that may not be free.
