Can letters, documents, etc be used as evidence to support a defendant or claimant in court.

If so, how is it authenticated and what if they are on a computer.

For example, if a defendant kept a digital diary/journal about their thoughts, feelings or experiences could its contents be used to support their case.

Thanks

Richard
