trouble with Excel

I have been using Excel to do some spreadsheets and then transferring the work onto a memory stick. Yesterday I did some work, saved it as normal but today when I tried to access it, it said it was unable to access it and wasn't compatible with the Excel programme it had been created with. Does anybody know why this has happened and what I can do? Thanks
