anyone recommend a good free antivirus program?

People say Avast is good. We pay for Norton and we are very happy with it.

i've used Avast before and found it to be good but when i reinstalled it on my Windows 8.1 machine recently it crashed everytime i tried to run a scan and so i've returned to using another free one call Panda http://www.cloudantivirus.com/en/ which has been good in the weeks that i've had it installed

Oddly enough, when I installed a vast, I lost my email client. Not sure if related, but it seemed strange. Thankfully, advice from buenchico got that back and it all seems ok.

Avast may top the poll but AVG is Also Very Good.

Do you still need an anti Virus programme if you are running Windows 8.1 ? I thought that it came with something called Defender built in, is this not good enough?

@fourteen85....Short answer is No because Windows Defender is an automatic part of W8 and W8.1

Defender is good although Not everyone is likely to agree with me.

If another AV programme is downloaded and installed, then by default Defender will cease to function but will return to duty if the additional AV programme is subsequently removed.

I've been using Baidu Antivirus for a while and it's been pretty smooth. It also helped clean up my computer and removed my unnecessary which was really useful.
