Birthday Reminders With Ipad Mini

Which is the best way to receive birthday reminders, a couple of days before the event, on my ipad mini? I need an alert to come up on the main screen with out having to go into a calender or diary app every week. Thanks all.

Put the persons birthday in their contact in the Contacts app, ensure that the birthdays calendar is one of the active calendars in the Calendar App. Ensure that the default alert for birthdays is set to the default of 2 days prior (settings, mail, contacts & calendars, scroll down to calendar, default alerts) and that calendar alerts in Notifications are set as you would want, lock screen, sound etc.

If I dont put them in my Contacts as I would have to do each one manually, and I just type them into the Calendar app, go into Settings etc as you said, would it still work?

No idea I'm afraid, possibly if you add them to the birthdays calendar, still going to have to add them to something, if they're friends or family then having them in contacts would be handy?

From what I can tell just doing this in Calender would give the same results
